Doctor Colameco's Education and Experience

Dr. Colameco attended Villanova University where he graduated with a B.A. summa cum laude.  He attended Temple University School of medicine, receiving an Emmanuel Weinberg Award for Excellence in Internal Medicine and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society.  As a resident in family medicine at Hahnemann University School of Medicine, he received training in psychosomatic medicine and psychiatry, served as Chief Resident and was one of 12 residents in the U.S. to receive a Meade Johnson Prize for graduate education.  Dr. Colameco received additional training in addiction medicine during a faculty development fellowship and earned a Masters Degree in Health Education from Temple University. 

 Dr. Colameco has served as medical director for  inpatient addiction treatment programs, family medicine residency director, health system medical director, and as an addiction specialist for inpatient and partial hospitalization psychiatric treatment programs. He has served as a member of the National Faculty for Core Content Review of Family Practice writing questions and case discussions on topics related to addiction and psychiatric disorders. He has held academic appointments at a number of area medical school and is currently an Assistant Clinical Professor, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey- School of Osteopathic Medicine, Department of Family Medicine.

First certified by the American Society of Addiction Medicine in 1987, he has been honored by the Society with the designation "Fellow"; in 2003, he was one of 219 physicians recognized as a Fellow for their contributions to the field.  Also, he is certified by the American Board of Addiction Medicine.

Dr. Colameco has been prescribing Suboxone ®  for opiate dependence since this medication first became available in 2002. He has published articles on buprenorphine (Suboxone®) treatment in peer reviewed journals. He believes that medication-assisted treatment is appropriate for selected patients and that all addicts need counseling as part of treatment.

Dr. Colameco lectures on topics of addiction and chronic pain at physician continuing education meetings. He has served as boards of non-profit organizations and has advocated for improved services as a committee member on local, state and national levels. In 2009, he served as one of three physicians on the NJ Division of Mental Health Services/Division of Addiction Medicine Task Force for on Co-occurring Disorders.

Dr. Colameco currently serves as Medical Director, Addiction Treatment Program, Volunteers of America Delaware Valley and a a Medical Director for Paradigm Management Services, providing case management for workers compensation cases involving chronic pain.  He is available to serve as a medical expert, accepting cases on a special needs basis.
